Short version: in the Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper choice, pick Wispr Flow if you want hands-off AI dictation across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android and are fine with cloud processing. Pick Superwhisper if you want local models, a free tier with no word cap, and lots of control over modes and prompts. A third option, VybeScript, is Mac-only and English/Spanish-only, but runs transcription and AI rewriting entirely on your Mac for $99 once.

Disclosure: VybeScript is our app. We’ve tried to be fair, and the table below shows where each app is the stronger pick.

Price: what each costs over time

Both Wispr Flow and Superwhisper have a free way in, which VybeScript doesn’t. Wispr Flow’s free plan gives you 2,000 words a week on desktop; Superwhisper’s free tier has no word cap but limits you to local Whisper models. If free is a hard requirement, those two (or Apple’s built-in Dictation) are where to look.

For paid plans, here’s the rough three-year cost for one person:

Privacy and where your voice goes

This is the biggest real difference between the three. Wispr Flow is cloud-only: your audio is transcribed on its servers. Wispr backs that with SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and offers a HIPAA BAA, which matters to organizations that need a vendor with paperwork. Two defaults are worth knowing: per Wispr’s own docs, Context Awareness (which reads text from the app you’re in) is on by default, and the “improve the model” setting is on by default for Free and Pro. Both can be turned off.

Superwhisper lets you choose. Use local models and your audio stays on your device; switch to a cloud model and it doesn’t. That’s flexible, but it means privacy depends on which mode is active.

VybeScript removes the choice: recording, transcription and AI cleanup all run on your Mac. There’s no account and no analytics SDK in the app. The only network connections are license activation, update checks and a one-time speech-model download. It holds no certifications, because there’s no cloud service to certify.

Everyday experience

Wispr Flow: polished and low-effort

Wispr Flow aims to work the same everywhere. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, which is a real advantage if you switch devices all day.

Superwhisper: a toolkit

Superwhisper rewards tinkering. You pick models, build custom modes, and write prompts for different kinds of writing. If you enjoy dialing in a setup, it’s hard to beat. If you’d rather not configure anything, that flexibility may be more than you need.

VybeScript: one hotkey, four styles

Press F6 or hold Control, speak, and text lands where your cursor is. Choose Raw (verbatim), Clean (removes filler and false starts), Polish (tighter, still your words) or Formal (clear, professional). Clean, Polish and Formal need macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence on; without it, transcription is just as accurate and you still get basic filler removal. A free word pack library covers legal, healthcare admin, real estate, finance, dev and AI tools, and Spanish/Miami names.
