Short version: if you used Dragon Dictate or Dragon Professional on a Mac mainly to write (letters, emails, reports, notes), VybeScript is a current, on-device replacement for that job. If you relied on Dragon to control your Mac by voice (opening apps, clicking menus, editing by command), use Voice Control, which is built into macOS. VybeScript doesn’t do voice commands.

What happened to Dragon for Mac?
For years, Dragon was the name in Mac dictation. Many professionals trained it to their voice, built up custom word lists, and wrote most of their correspondence with it. Then, in October 2018, Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac. The Windows version carried on, along with Dragon Anywhere on mobile, but Mac users were left with an app that would never be updated again.
If you’re still running Dragon for Mac version 6, it may keep working for a while. But it receives no updates. Most people looking for a “Dragon for Mac replacement” today want the same simple thing they had before: talk, and have accurate text appear.

What will feel different coming from Dragon
You don’t say the punctuation
With Dragon, many people learned to say “comma” and “new paragraph” out loud. VybeScript works on whole thoughts: you speak naturally, and the writing style you choose decides how the text comes out. Raw gives you exactly what you said. Clean, the default, removes filler words and false starts. Polish tightens it while keeping your words. Formal turns it into clear, professional prose. Polish and Formal also turn a spoken list into bullets and a series of steps into a numbered list.
No voice training session
There’s no profile to train. On first launch, VybeScript downloads its speech model once (about 470 MB) and runs a short performance check to see how fast your Mac is. Then you press F6, or hold Control while you talk, and start dictating. Both hotkeys can be changed.
Your word list carries over, by hand
If you built up a Dragon vocabulary of names and specialist terms, you can add the important ones in Settings → Vocabulary. VybeScript holds up to 100 words, either as corrections (“when you hear this, write that”) or as custom terms. Free starter packs for legal, healthcare admin, real estate, finance and accounting, and other fields are on the support page. If a word keeps coming out wrong, email it to us and we’ll fix it within 48 hours.
It stays on your Mac
VybeScript doesn’t send your voice to a cloud service. Recording, transcription and AI cleanup all happen on your Mac, using NVIDIA Parakeet or OpenAI Whisper for speech and Apple’s on-device model for rewriting. The only connections it makes are license activation, update checks and the one-time model download. If you ever catch it sending your audio or transcripts off your Mac, you get a full refund, at any time.
When Dragon or Voice Control is the better choice
To be straight about it, VybeScript isn’t a full Dragon replacement for everyone:
- You need to control your Mac by voice. If you open apps, click buttons, scroll, or select and correct text by spoken command, use Voice Control in System Settings → Accessibility. It’s free and built in. VybeScript only turns speech into text.
- You need Dragon’s specialist medical or legal editions. Those continue on Windows. If your workflow depends on them, a Windows PC may still be the right tool.
- Your Mac has an Intel processor. VybeScript needs Apple Silicon (M1 or later).
- You dictate in a language other than English or Spanish. VybeScript supports those two.
- Your Mac can’t run Apple Intelligence. Transcription is just as accurate without it, but the Clean, Polish and Formal styles fall back to basic filler removal. If that’s a deal-breaker, our Apple Intelligence compatibility promise refunds you within 30 days.
Getting started
- Buy VybeScript on the pricing page and download it. It’s a direct download, not from the Mac App Store.
- Open it from the menu bar and allow Accessibility access, so it can type into your apps. (Without it, your text is copied to the clipboard instead.)
- Click into a document or email, press
F6, and speak. - Pick your default style. Formal is a good match for letters and reports.
There’s no free trial. Instead, you get a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked.
