How do I change the recording shortcut?
Quick fix
Open Settings > Recording. Next to Toggle recording or Push-to-talk, open Presets and choose one. The change is saved right away.
The defaults for a new install are a quick tap of Option to start and stop, and holding Control to talk.
Step by step
- Open the VybeScript window (if it is closed, choose Show VybeScript from the "Vybe" menu in your menu bar) and click the gear icon at the top right. This opens Settings.
- Find the Recording section.
- Pick which shortcut to change:
- Toggle recording: press once to start, press again to stop.
- Push-to-talk: hold while speaking, release to stop.
- To use a ready-made option, open Presets and pick one.
- To use your own, click the button that shows the current shortcut.
- Press the keys you want. You can press a single key, a key with modifiers, or a modifier on its own such as Option.
- To cancel without changing anything, press Esc.
Two modifier-only shortcuts cannot use the same modifier. If you try, VybeScript shows a message such as "Option is already your push-to-talk key. Choose a different one." The same modifier on its own cannot be both a tap and a hold.
Read the warning
If a shortcut may cause trouble, a warning appears under it. For example:
- A single key with no modifier, such as a letter or a number, can trigger while you type. Function keys do not get this warning.
- Control plus one key is used by some macOS shortcuts.
- A shortcut made only of modifier keys that includes ⌘ can clash with app shortcuts.
- Some combinations are reserved by macOS and may never reach VybeScript, such as ⌘Space (Spotlight), ⌘Tab and F3.
For some of these, the warning tells you which macOS setting to change. VybeScript shows no warning for a function key on its own (other than F3) or for a modifier key on its own other than ⌘.
Still not working?
- If the new shortcut does nothing, see My shortcut doesn't respond.
- Shortcuts that use a modifier key on its own, like the defaults, need Accessibility to be on.
