How do I dictate for the first time?
Quick fix
Click in a text field. Tap Option once, speak, then tap Option again. Your words appear at the cursor.
Prefer to hold? Hold Control while you speak and let go when you are done.
Step by step
- Click where you want the text to go, in any app.
- Start recording. Use either:
- Tap to start and stop: tap Option by itself, quickly. Tap it again to stop.
- Hold to talk: hold Control and speak. Let go to stop.
- Speak normally.
- Stop recording. While you speak the status shows Listening. After you stop it moves through Transcribing and Delivering.
- Your text appears. The status shows Inserted. If it shows Copied, press ⌘V.
Those are the default shortcuts for a new install. If you installed an earlier version of VybeScript and never picked a toggle key, yours may still be F6. Check Settings > Recording. You can change them.
Good to know
- A quick tap counts only if you press Option alone and let go within a fraction of a second. Pressing it with another key, a mouse click, or holding it longer is not a tap.
- The default shortcuts (tap Option, hold Control) only work once Accessibility is on. If you chose the clipboard in the setup guide, use the Start Recording button until you turn it on. See Accessibility permission.
- Very short recordings fail with "Recording was too short to transcribe." Speak a little longer.
- You can also use the Start Recording button in the VybeScript window, or Toggle Recording in the menu bar item "Vybe" (the menu shows your shortcut in brackets, for example "Toggle Recording (Option)"). When you start from the VybeScript window, the text goes to the last other app you used. If there is none, it is copied.
- Dictation needs an active trial or license. If it is missing or has ended, VybeScript says so instead of recording.
- The words come out in your current writing style. The default is Clean, which removes fillers like "um".
Still not working?
- Nothing happens when you press the key: see My shortcut doesn't respond.
- Words are copied but not pasted: see Accessibility permission.
