My shortcut doesn't start dictation
Quick fix
Open VybeScript and click Start Recording. If that works, the app is fine and only the shortcut is the problem. Shortcuts made of only a modifier key, like the default ones, need Accessibility turned on. Check that first.
Step by step
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and make sure VybeScript is on.
- In VybeScript, go to Settings and look at the Recording card. Note your Toggle recording and Push-to-talk shortcuts.
- Use them the right way. With the default settings, tap Option once to start and tap it again to stop. Hold Control while you speak and let go to stop. If you set up VybeScript before Option became the default, your toggle shortcut may still be F6, so use whatever the card shows.
- Tap quickly. A modifier tap only counts if you press and release it by itself, in under half a second. Holding it, or pressing it with another key or a mouse click, does not count.
- If you set your own shortcut, try a different one. In the Recording card, open Presets next to the shortcut and pick another, or click the shortcut button to record a new one. macOS or another app may be using the same keys, and VybeScript shows a warning under the shortcut when macOS reserves that combination. See Change the shortcut.
- After your Mac wakes from sleep, wait a moment and try again. VybeScript re-checks its shortcuts on wake and before each dictation.
- If it still does nothing, quit VybeScript (choose Quit from the Vybe menu in your menu bar) and open it again.
Still not working?
Another app may be using the same key. Pick a different shortcut in Settings and test it. If nothing works, send us a report: see Send a diagnostics report.
