What does "Format as" do, and why can't I see it?

Short answer

Format as chooses the layout for your text: Auto, Email, Chat, Notes or Document. It only appears when your writing style is Polish or Formal. Find it in Settings > Transcription. The layouts work even when Apple Intelligence is off.

Details

  • Auto: VybeScript picks email, chat, notes or a document from what you say.
  • Email, Chat, Notes, Document: forces that layout every time.

Match the app you're typing in

Under the choices there is a switch: Match the format to the app I'm typing in. It is on by default. When it is on, VybeScript uses the kind of app (mail, chat, notes or document) as a small hint for the layout. What you say counts for more, so the app only nudges the choice. A format you choose by hand always wins.

Only the kind of app is used. It stays on this Mac and is never stored or sent.

Browsers, code editors and apps VybeScript does not recognize give no hint, so the layout is left to your words.

If you can't see Format as

  1. Open Settings > Transcription.
  2. Under Writing style, choose Polish or Formal.
  3. Format as appears below.

Raw and Clean do not restructure your text, so they have no layout setting.

If you get bullets you did not want

Lists and bullets come from Polish and Formal laying out things you listed out loud, with or without Apple Intelligence. To get plain paragraphs, switch the Writing style to Clean.

Still not working?

  • If Polish and Formal do not seem to rewrite anything, Apple Intelligence may be off. See Polish and Formal are unavailable.
  • Not sure which app type VybeScript sees? Choose a specific layout instead of Auto.
