Troubleshooting

VybeScript doesn't hear me or the mic won't start

Quick fix

Open VybeScript, go to Settings, and look at Microphone on the Recording card. If it says Required, click Allow Microphone or Open Microphone Settings and turn VybeScript on. If it says Allowed, check that your Mac is using the microphone you expect.

Step by step

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure VybeScript is on. macOS only shows its permission prompt once. If you declined the prompt, turn VybeScript on in this list. The Open Microphone Settings button in VybeScript opens it for you.
  2. Open System Settings and look at the Sound settings for the input device. Pick the microphone you want and speak. The input level should move. If VybeScript says No usable microphone audio was captured, check the selected input device here.
  3. If VybeScript says no microphone input is available, reconnect your headphones or headset and try again.
  4. Speak for a moment before you stop. A recording of only a fraction of a second is reported as too short to transcribe.
  5. If you see No speech was detected, move closer, speak a little louder, and check that nothing is muting the microphone.
  6. If a Bluetooth headset (such as AirPods) is your Mac's input, VybeScript records from the Mac's built-in microphone instead (on a Mac that has one), so the headset does not drop to lower-quality audio. This is expected, so speak toward the Mac, not the headset.
  7. Test with a short dictation: click Start Recording in the main window, say a sentence, and click Stop Recording.

Still not working?

Quit VybeScript (choose Quit from the Vybe menu in your menu bar) and open it again. If a different app can record from the same microphone, send us a report: see Send a diagnostics report.
