How do I install VybeScript and set it up?
Quick fix
Open the file you downloaded, drag VybeScript into your Applications folder, then open it from there. A setup guide walks you through the rest. It takes a few minutes.
You need a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14 or later.
Step by step
- Open the downloaded disk image and drag VybeScript into Applications.
- Open VybeScript from Applications.
- Read the terms. Tick the box that says you are 18 or older, agree to the Terms of Service and the End User License Agreement, and have read the Privacy Policy. Then choose Agree and continue. You must accept before you can dictate.
- The setup guide opens. It has up to seven steps: Welcome, Unlock, Mic, Paste, Try it, Style and Done. The Unlock step is skipped when a license is already active on your Mac. Choose Continue to move to the next step. Unlock, Mic and Paste move on by themselves once they succeed.
- Welcome: under I dictate in, choose English or Spanish. A checkbox lets the app's menus and buttons use the same language.
- Unlock: to start the free trial, choose Start your free trial (it is shown only on a Mac that has never had a trial). A page opens in your browser where you get a free key by email, with no card needed. Then type the key under Already purchased? Enter your license key and choose Activate. If you already bought VybeScript, type the key from your purchase email the same way. You need an internet connection for this, and you cannot continue until a trial or license is active. See plans and pricing.
- Mic: choose Allow Microphone and say yes when macOS asks. See Microphone access.
- Paste: choose Enable Paste. macOS opens Privacy & Security: switch on VybeScript under Accessibility, then come back. This is what lets text land where your cursor is. Or choose Use the clipboard for now and paste with ⌘V. See Accessibility permission.
- Try it: choose Start recording (or use your shortcut), read the sample sentence out loud, then choose Stop. Your text appears in the setup window. Then choose Continue. You can also choose Skip this step.
- Style: pick a writing style, then choose Continue. You can change it later.
- Done: choose Start Using VybeScript. If you have not yet decided about automatic problem reports, a short window asks first. You can say no.
VybeScript then lives in your menu bar under the name "Vybe". Click into any text field and use your shortcut.
The first-launch download
VybeScript downloads its faster speech model once (about 600 MB). Dictation works while it downloads, using the speech engine that comes with the app, and gets quicker when the download finishes. After that, dictation works offline. The speech models are saved on your Mac outside the app, in the FluidAudio folder in ~/Library/Application Support, so updates and reinstalls do not download them again. See Uninstall or reinstall.
Still not working?
- You can reopen the guide any time from Settings with the Setup Guide button.
- If macOS refuses to open the app, see the "cannot open" warning.
