Troubleshooting

How do I uninstall or reinstall VybeScript?

Short answer

To remove VybeScript completely, quit it, drag it to the Trash, then delete the files it leaves behind: your saved data, its speech models and, if you want, its license records. Only reinstalling? Skip the cleanup: a reinstall keeps your license and reuses the speech models already on your Mac.

Reinstalling instead?

A reinstall keeps your license, because it is saved in your Mac's Keychain, not inside the app. It also reuses the speech models, because they are stored outside the app. So quit VybeScript, drag it to the Trash, follow the Reinstall steps at the end of this page, and skip steps 4 to 7 below. Do not use Deactivate this Mac unless you want to move the license to another Mac.

In newer versions: remove everything from inside the app

Newer versions of VybeScript have a Remove VybeScript card in Settings. This option ships with the next app release, so if you do not see it, update VybeScript or use the manual steps below.

  1. Open Settings, find the Remove VybeScript card and click Remove VybeScript and all its data….
  2. VybeScript lists what it keeps on this Mac, with the size of each item: the app, its speech models (Parakeet Ultra, the taught-words model and the old Parakeet v3 if it is there), your history and taught words, diagnostic logs, your settings and caches, and the license on this Mac. Everything is ticked when the window opens. Untick anything you want to keep.
  3. Optional: use Export words… and Export history… first. Your history and taught words cannot be recovered after removal.
  4. Click Remove. Nothing is deleted until you do, and it cannot be undone.

What happens next. The license row is ticked by default. Removing it deactivates this Mac, which frees its activation, so it needs an internet connection. After that you need your license key again to use VybeScript, on this Mac or on another one. If VybeScript cannot reach the license server, it stops before deleting anything, and you can try again or continue without freeing the activation (everything else is removed and the license stays saved on this Mac). The app is moved to the Trash and quits, and your settings and caches are cleared right after it quits. The free-trial counter stays on purpose, so removing the app does not give you a fresh trial. Your microphone and Accessibility entries in System Settings stay, because macOS owns them, and so do the models of other apps in the shared speech-model folder.

Remove VybeScript completely

Do these steps in this order.

  1. Optional but recommended: deactivate this Mac. If you will use your license on another Mac, first make sure your license key is saved (see I lost my license key). Then open License… from the Vybe menu and click Deactivate this Mac. This removes the license from this Mac, so you enter the key again wherever you use it next.
  2. Quit VybeScript. Choose Quit from the Vybe menu in your menu bar.
  3. Remove the app. Open Applications, drag VybeScript to the Trash and empty the Trash. The app is about 240 MB. It also contains the Whisper speech engine and its small model, so those go with it.
  4. Delete the data VybeScript saved on your Mac. In Finder, use the Go menu to go to a folder (or press Shift+Command+G), paste the folder from the list below, press Return, and drag the item named after it to the Trash. Repeat for each line, then empty the Trash. Skip any item you do not find.
    • Folder ~/Library/Application Support, item VybeScript: your dictation history, your taught words (custom words and corrections) and problem logs. If you ever turned on Compare engines on every dictation (testing), it also holds the comparison log.
    • Folder ~/Library/Preferences, item studio.boxcreative.vybescript.mvp.plist: your settings, such as shortcuts and writing style.
    • Folder ~/Library/Caches, item studio.boxcreative.vybescript.mvp: temporary files, including downloaded update files.
    • Folder ~/Library/HTTPStorages, items studio.boxcreative.vybescript.mvp and studio.boxcreative.vybescript.mvp.binarycookies: network records macOS keeps for the app.
    • Folder ~/Library/WebKit, item studio.boxcreative.vybescript.mvp: storage macOS keeps for the app's web content.

This cannot be undone. Your history and taught words are deleted for good. To keep your taught words, do this before you delete anything: open Settings > Vocabulary and choose Export… on the Vocabulary card. You can import the file later.

You do not need to clean up VybeScript's short-lived recordings. It deletes each recording right after it is transcribed. Any leftover from a crash is swept within about 20 minutes while the app is running, or the next time it starts.

  5. Delete the speech models. The speech models are stored outside the app, in a folder named FluidAudio (named after the speech library VybeScript uses). Deleting the app or the VybeScript folder does not remove them. In Finder, go to a folder the same way, paste ~/Library/Application Support/FluidAudio/Models, press Return, and drag these folders to the Trash:
    • parakeet-ultra: the default speech model, about 600 MB.
    • parakeet-ctc-110m-coreml: the small model that listens for your taught words, about 100 MB. It is there only if you used taught words.
    • parakeet-tdt-0.6b-v3: the model that earlier versions of VybeScript used, about 460 MB. It is there only if you used an earlier version. In newer versions, VybeScript deletes this model by itself once the new model has worked for a while, and tells you how much space that freed.

Delete only those folders. The FluidAudio folder itself belongs to the speech library, and other apps built on the same library may keep their own models in it. Leave any other folder you see there alone, and delete FluidAudio itself only if you are sure no other app uses it. Deleting the three folders is safe: if you install VybeScript again, it downloads the model it needs once more.

  6. Optional: delete the license records in the Keychain. VybeScript keeps small items in your Mac's Keychain on purpose, so that a reinstall keeps your license and its free-trial status. They are not removed with the app. If you want nothing left, and your license is still active on this Mac, do step 1 first, then open the Keychain Access app (it is in the Utilities folder inside Applications). Search for studio.boxcreative.vybescript.license, select the item whose account is license-record (your license on this Mac, already gone if you deactivated), delete it and confirm if asked. VybeScript also keeps a small record of how much of the free trial this Mac has used; leave it in place. Without the license record, this Mac is no longer activated, so keep your license key and enter it again if you reinstall.
  7. Optional: remove the old permission entries. After you delete the app, macOS still lists VybeScript in the Microphone and Accessibility lists in the Privacy & Security part of System Settings. They do no harm. To tidy them, open each list, select VybeScript and remove it with the minus button under the list.

Reinstall

  1. Download the latest version from our website.
  2. Drag it into Applications and open it. If Finder asks whether to replace an older copy, confirm the replacement.
  3. Enter your license key if the app asks. See Activate your license key.
  4. Allow the microphone and Accessibility again if macOS asks. See Allow the microphone and Allow Accessibility.

The speech models are not downloaded again if they are still on your Mac. When VybeScript starts, it checks which models are already there and downloads only what is missing. That is also why a complete uninstall has to remove the models yourself (step 5).

Still not working?

If macOS blocks the new copy, see macOS says VybeScript can't be opened.
